Councillor Steve Siddons, Leader of the Labour Group and member of the on Scarborough Borough Council’s Audit Committee has won an investigation into the council’s spending on the Tour de Yorkshire event. This comes in the wake of a wider probe into the financial activities of Welcome to Yorkshire.
Cllr Siddons said, “Over the last three years the Council has spent over half a million pounds, plus an unknown cost in staff support, on the Tour de Yorkshire event. Each year, Labour have asked searching questions regarding the value for money of the event but have never received satisfactory answers.”
“Given the current investigations around the financial activities of Welcome to Yorkshire, the event organiser, now is the time to have a full independent audit of the cost benefits of the money spent by SBC.”
“We are delighted at the coverage this event gives to the Yorkshire Coast but have a duty to ensure the money spent represents value for money for the hard-working council tax payers of this Borough.”
The Audit Committee accepted Cllr Siddons request and the investigation will be urgently placed on the committee’s forward workplan.
