What does Scarborough Borough Council do?
Scarborough Borough Council is a second tier authority. While the borough collects our council taxes, the lion’s share of what’s raised goes to North Yorkshire County Council to pay for education, social care, highways, and a range of other services.
But Scarborough borough has some very important responsibilities. In particular it has a remit for housing and homelessness – though it’s no longer a residential landlord. Social housing is now accessed through a housing association, North Yorkshire Home Choice.
The council’s other main concerns include emptying our bins, handling planning applications, environmental issues, parking, sport and leisure centres, tourism, and harbours.
SBC elections are held every four years, when the whole council is up for re-election. Voting in 2019, on Thursday 2 May, used new ward boundaries with the number of councillors reducing from 50 to 46.
You can check which ward you’re in by looking on the Boundary Commission website.
The Scarborough Borough Council website lists all current councillors.
The political make-up of the council after the 2019 election is Conservative 16; Labour 13; Independent 10; Cluster of Independent Members 3; Green 2; UKIP 1; 1 of no political affiliation.
