The Scarborough coachbuilder Plaxtons is a great example of how business working constructively with unions can create a win/win situation, says Hugo.
“I was delighted to be invited to Plaxtons to meet management, staff and Unite representatives. This is a hugely important local employer that works with the union to foster good industrial relations.”
Hugo was particularly impressed by the electric vehicles Plaxtons now produce. “This type of business will be hugely important in delivering Labour’s Green Industrial Revolution.”
Thanks to a deal struck between Plaxtons management and Unite, staff can access learning to improve maths and literacy. “It’s done 50% in work time, 50% personal. Space and equipment are co-funded by the company and union. It’s a great example of supporting lifelong learning in a work environment.”
“Another really good development is that several staff are now trained in mental health first aid. The union reps told me that this has raised awareness, and actually encouraged a number of employees to come forward with mental health issues.”
