Women's Group

Open to all local Women Members.

The Women’s Group is an informal forum for meeting and sharing ideas, concerns, and encouragement to get more actively involved if you want t

More active Women Members.

One aim over the past 18 months, has been to encourage and support more women members to stand for election – as Branch delegates to the General Committee of the local Party; for Officer roles in Branch or Constituency; and as candidates for local Council elections. By sharing our skills, knowledge and experiences we are able to support each other, and the more women that are visible in these roles, the easier it is for others to get involved too.

Election campaigns.

Our little group of women canvassers played an active role in the 2019 General Election, providing door knocking teams, backroom office functions, and campaign organisation to our Campaign team. Sadly Labour did not gain the seat, but we feel proud of the contribution we made, and would welcome experienced and novice members to join the next round of campaigning for the County Council Elections in 2021. In 2018, we were able to support more women to stand for election to Scarborough Borough Council, although with a result of 4 out of 13 Members elected, we still have a way to go!

Local issue campaigns.

Covid restrictions have called a temporary halt to our ideas for active campaigning on local issues, but we are looking for ways to continue some activity online. All ideas, experiences, information, contributions welcomed.

Just before lockdown, we had planned for a series of activities to balance out the stresses of party politics with – for example – a Walk and Tidy Group (short local walk combined with some litter picking); Walking Group – for women who are able to do slightly longer country walks; and possibly some social/cultural events, helping us get to know each other better, raise funds for local good causes, be entertained by performances from some of our fabulous women members.

Since lockdown, we have managed a few Zoom meetings, and will plan to try this again. A few of us met to commemorate the anniversary of Hiroshima at the Pagoda in Peasholm Park; and 6 of us had a September stroll along North Bay sands, with a refreshment break at the Chalet Cafe.

For now, it seems, we are mainly stuck with ‘virtual’ contact and meetings. If you are on FaceBook, we have a page for the Women’s Group – let me know if you would be happy to join the page, and I can send you an invite. We also have an active WhatsApp Women’s Group, so please get in touch if you would like to join – or you may be able to find it online.

And finally, we will be sending out an email to all women members to update on any activities – so please do open and read it!
