Whitby Labour Party’s team has been busy canvassing opinion for Thursday’s by-election in Mayfield. There is clearly a concern among voters about housing in Whitby, the lack of affordable homes, the proliferation of second homes and holiday cottages, inflating house prices and excluding local people from the market. This is something our Labour Council is addressing with some urgency. Residents also worry about the lack of facilities for our young people. The previous Tory administration in Scarborough turned the Youth Centre in the middle of town into a cocktail bar, and now we have next to nothing for children and younger people. ‘I will be investigating what is possible once I am elected’, says our candidate, Gerald Dennett.
