I put myself forward to stand as a borough councillor primarily because I was fed up of seeing big decisions made on behalf of the borough by a seemingly small clique of people in the cabinet.

Upon being elected and then our party taking control of the council, things are changing. We are working towards a committee system of local governance which will include members from all parties. This system is far more open and transparent and hopefully work to benefit the entire borough.

I am proud to have a 100 percent record on responding to my enquiries (of which there are many!). I check on my emails throughout the day and tend to deal with them immediately. Usually this entails ringing up (or emailing) a Town Hall officer for their advice and replying to the resident. If action can be made, then great! I hope to maintain this work ethos and expand my role over time within the Labour Group.

I’m deputising on the Planning Committee, and also looking forward to carrying out my role as Trustee on the Scarborough Municipal Charity and helping direct grants to those in the borough who need it.

Long term I would love to see car electric charging points and water fountains installed wherever there are roadworks in appropriate areas. I’d like to see us tackling homelessness and especially rough sleeping throughout our borough. I’d love to see us finally provide a multi-screen cinema and to build something for which the town can be proud at the Futurist site. Perhaps a new theatre – that’s a bit radical, right?
